A poem about meditating upon your mother and father

What Was Your Face?

Breathe deep, Shakti, and open your heart;
Look deep in your heart to see your Mother.
Look also to see the face of your Father.
See them as you remember them pleasantly,
Perchance as they gaze upon you as a baby.

Look into their eyes, and see them as the same.
Picture your mother, smiling at her mother and father;
And baby father as he smiles up to his mother as well.
What is the face you see, Shakti?
Is it the face of your mother’s mother?

Look deeper, Shakti, look longer, past the wide array,
Of all your venerated ancestors, who passed their life to you.
Look farther to the ancestor of all people,
The ancestor of all living animals,
The ancestor of life.

Look farther Shakti, and see the ancestor of matter;
Glowing energy, hydrogen fusing into helium, generating light, and heat.
Look beyond, Shakti, to the electrons, protons, and neutrons.
Those same things that give you the atmosphere, so you may have breath;
That give you light, so you may take food;
That give you warmth, so you may survive in a cold universe.

Breathe deep Shakti, and gaze upon your Original Face;
It will never disappear;
Not while you shine your light inward, and it shines outward;
It is the face you had before you were born;
And you will have it after the universe is destroyed.
